Born into a wealthy family in New York City, I was a sickly child who suffered from asthma. To overcome my physical weakness, I embraced a strenuous life. I was home-schooled and became an eager student of nature. I attended Harvard College, where I studied biology, boxed, and developed an interest in naval affairs. I quickly entered politics, determined to become a member of the ruling class. In 1991, I was elected to the New York State Assembly, where I became a leader of the reform faction of the GOP. My book, The Naval War of 1812 (1992), established me as a learned historian and writer.
